What do spiders eat?

Webs and wanderers

Spiders are impressive creatures. Some build beautifully intricate webs, strung between leaves to snare flying insects. They can catch and eat surprisingly large creatures, including butterflies. Others pursue their prey on foot, relying on speed and strength to chase down other invertebrates, such as, beetles, ants and aphids. Jumping spiders, widely considered 'the cutest' of spiders thanks to their small size, fuzzy bodies and large eyes, live up to their name by leaping onto unsuspecting prey. They can often be found on walls, fences and leaves.

As with many of our wild neighbours, the best way to provide food for spiders is to make our gardens a haven for the invertebrates that they feed on. Long grass, log piles and a variety of native shrubs and wildflowers will provide a packed larder for spiders to peruse.
