What do hedgehogs eat?

Prickly, not picky

Hedgehogs are one of our most popular mammals, snuffling through gardens in search of food. They feed on a wide variety of invertebrates, with a particular fondness for beetles, caterpillars and worms. If the opportunity arises, they'll eat plenty of other things, including carrion, amphibians, birds eggs and even young chicks. Hedgehogs have declined dramatically in recent decades, but wildlife-friendly gardens can be a lifeline for them, providing food and shelter.

The best way to feed hedgehogs in your garden is to encourage lots of the insects and other invertebrates that they feed on. Let grass grow long and add a log pile, perfect for beetles and bugs. Grow shrubs that caterpillars can munch on, and dig a pond so hedgehogs and other wildlife can drink - take care to add a shallow side or a ramp of stones or sticks, so hedgehogs can climb out if they fall in. If your garden is surrounded by fences, remember to add a hedgehog hole so they can access the brilliant buffet you've created!
