Alliums

A smelly companion

Onions, shallots, leeks and garlic are in the allium family. Many smell strongly, which makes them a great companion plant for carrots and parsnips – by growing these together you can deter both onion fly and carrot root fly.

Slugs and snails aren't keen on these tasty treats, either. In fact, slugs and snails are overlooked garden heroes and this year, they're the focus of our Wild About Gardens campaign in association with the RHS. Slugs and snails actually have vital benefits for a wildlife-friendly garden, so find out more and make friends with molluscs here!

Grow alliums in a sunny spot in fertile, weed-free soil.
